In recent years, there has been an increasing demand for physical therapy aimed at recovering and maintaining physical function for patients who are physically handicapped due to illness, injury, old age, etc. from the viewpoint of QOL (quality of life). In the Department of Physical Therapy, we provide practical education through clinical training at local medical institutions and train physical therapists who can play an active role in a wide range of fields such as medical care, health, welfare, long-term care, and sports.

"Seminar system" to promote mutual exchange among students
In Department of Physical Therapy, students not only study the subjects they learn in class, but also promote interaction between grade levels. In order to have students experience more of these programs, 'Practical learning’ on campus and to nurture students with a more humane and specialized degree, we have adopted a seminar system with 10 students in each grade from 1 to 4th year.

In the 1st and 2nd year, students learn from basic medical knowledge to the basics of evaluation for major diseases through clinical training. Practical training is in full swing in the 3rd and 4th year. Students learn physiotherapy evaluation at sites such as hospitals and facilities, acquire skills through long-term practical training for patients, and challenge national examinations. There are also overseas trainings for those who wish to learn international sensibilities and practices in the United States.

Specialized basic field

Anatomy training
In order to deepen the understanding of the normal structure of the body, Students conducy practical training with human skeleton specimens and anatomical specimens, touch from the body surface, and observe anatomy training. In particular, the goal is to fully master the tactile method from the body surface. The basis of medicine is anatomy, and anatomy is deeply related in all specialized subjects, but it is a manual operation of physiotherapy, and it can never be done unless the body can be palpated. Therefore, anatomy training is one of the basics. In the course of the lecture, We explain each muscle, bone, and nerve that can be palpated from the body surface, and students will practice each other after a demonstration.

Specialized Fields

Introduction to Exercise Therapy
Based on specialized basic subjects (anatomy / physiology), we offer typical exercise therapy for physical therapists' medical services, related medicines for the motor system, central nervous system, and internal disorders, which are the target diseases of physical therapy, and exercise. Students learn various exercise therapies based on basic theories such as therapeutics. As a prerequisite for learning actual motor therapy, we thoroughly review the structure of skeletal muscles, muscle contraction patterns, voluntary movements and their control / motor learning. In addition, we will review the relationship between exercise and breathing, circulation, and metabolism, which are the energy of exercise. After that, we will study the theory and method of range of motion exercise and muscle strengthening exercise, which are the core of exercise therapy. Students also learn about exercise therapy for coordination disorder, endurance enhancement, cognitive impairment, and pain.

Physics
Physical therapy is used as a way to increase the effectiveness of treatment by a physiotherapist by warming or passing electricity. As familiar things, baths and kotatsu can be said to be a type of physical therapy. The purpose of physiotherapy equipment is to give physical energy to the body to cause a biological reaction and improve the symptoms, but there is also a risk that the symptoms will be exacerbated by causing a biological reaction. In physiotherapy, how physical energy causes a biological reaction, as well as features and operation methods related to various physiotherapy devices such as traction therapy, water therapy, hyperthermia, cold therapy, electrotherapy, and phototherapy, actually patients. Students learn a series of flow and risk management when using it.

Practical training and exercises

Motion analysis
Understanding the physical movements that are the subject of physiotherapy and reflecting that knowledge in the treatment is important for the development of physiotherapy. The purpose is to learn the basic techniques necessary for quantitative analysis from the aspect of motion, and to acquire the measurement principles and techniques of kinematic analysis and kinematic analysis as methods of kinematic analysis. Understanding normal behavior can also help you understand anomalies, and understanding anomalies can help you understand normality. Understand normal and abnormal movements by actually analyzing the standing movements and walking movements by "how to analyze" the movements.

Nervous system physiotherapy therapy exercise
The purpose for this seminar is to carry out nervous system physiotherapy practice which is a basic exercise for adult central nervous system disease (cerebral vascular disorder) through practical training while imagining the disability based on the knowledge learned in nervous system physiotherapy therapy I and II. Cerebrovascular disorders present with various levels of paralysis (hemiplegia, limb paralysis, etc.) and degree (flaccid paralysis, spastic paralysis, etc.) depending on the site of brain damage. A typical approach along the course from the onset of cerebrovascular accidents in typical motor paralysis cases centered on those pyramidal tract disorders is described in "1. Protective joint range of motion", "2. Each characteristic movement for hemiplegics and how to ‘assist’ them" and " 3.Special Techniques for Hemiplegia (mainly PNF)", and we conduct practical training about these cases. In addition, students learn the basic exercise therapy techniques required when implementing a physical therapy program, assistance for recovery of activities of daily living, and their teaching techniques.

The clinical training, which begins in the 2nd year, lasts for a total of about 18 weeks before graduation. In the practical training, different hospitals and facilities are set for each year according to the knowledge and experience acquired in the class, and by accumulating treatment experience in various places, students learn various feedback of rehabilitation and various treatment methods practically.

The duration of clinical training is about 2 weeks in the 2nd year, about 10 weeks in the 3rd year, and about 8 weeks in the 4th year. The training will be conducted at different hospitals and facilities. By interacting with patients in the clinical setting, we will deepen our understanding of the lessons.

Clinical training I
The two-week clinical training be conducted in February of the 2nd year will be the start of the training aimed at becoming a physical therapist. In the practical training, based on the knowledge and skills learned in the first and 2nd year years at the site of hospitals and facilities, students learn the basic knowledge and skills necessary for physical therapists while receiving guidance from instructors. We also offer hands-on experience and learning to the extent that students participate under supervision, such as medical interviews, examinations and measurements. In addition, while communicating with patients and other occupations and building relationships, we also develop professional attitudes and ethics as medical staff. Prior to this training, we have third-year students become subjects and conduct the OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination).

Clinical training II
In the 3rd year, clinical training will become full-fledged, with four weeks in the fall and four weeks in the winter. Before the training, we will reconfirm the test and measurement technique in the seminar, thoroughly master the flow of physical therapy evaluation, and conduct the OSCE (Objective Clinical Examination). In the practical training, students continue to learn the knowledge and skills of physiotherapists at hospitals and facilities. Gathering information to the extent that it is possible to participate is the same as in the 2nd year, in this grade, we aim to be able to interpret the disability and identify issues by using the obtained information, and plan physical therapy treatment for them.

Clinical training III
In the 4th year, in May or August, students hold a long-term continuous on-site training for 8 weeks. In the seminar before the training, students extract the problems of the evaluation training of oneself and make the plan for solving the problems, and implemente it. In addition, group learning will improve your knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and kinematics, and then challenge long-term training. In this year, it is necessary to learn more practically, such as thinking about clinical reasoning methods from the problems of patients while observing the physical therapy work performed by the instructor.

The OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination, commonly known as "Oskey") is the examination for objectively evaluating the basic clinical skills of medical students, etc., who have already been adopted in the National Examination for Medical Practitioners in Canada and the Specialist Examination in the United States. The Department of Physical Therapy conducts the OSCE before and after the 2nd year and 3rd year training in order to have basic clinical skills and attitudes based on the spirit of Practical learning.

Credit Recognition

Study at the Faculty of Fukuoka Medical Technology is based on a credit system. In the credit system, a fixed number of credits is set for all subjects, and if student passes the exam or other method after the lesson and preparatory study (preparation, review, etc.) of that subject, the fixed number of credits is given.

Credit system

There are five types of courses: lectures, exercises, experiments, practical training, and practical skills, which are completed in half a semester except for special courses. Each course is calculated according to the following criteria. Please refer to the course registration table for the number of credits for each subject. Naturally, preparatory studies (preparation, review, etc.) are also required. The syllabus explains the preparation and study requirements for each course, therefore please study in a systematic manner.

Unit
Credits are determined based on the study time. Taking into considereation of teaching methods and educational effects of the classes, one credit is 45 hours (15 hours for class, 15 hours for preparation, 15 hours for review).
