Teikyo School of Medicine Partners with Niigata Prefecture to Tackle Doctor Shortage: A Win-Win for Medical Education and Regional Health

In a significant stride towards bolstering regional healthcare, Teikyo University marked a pivotal moment on Tuesday with the signing of a groundbreaking agreement at the Niigata Prefectural Office. This accord solidifies a strategic partnership between the School of Medicine, Niigata Prefecture, and Uonuma City, aimed at rectifying the dearth of doctors and addressing the uneven distribution of medical professionals in the region.

At the heart of this collaboration is the commitment to fostering a stable healthcare landscape by training medical students and graduating doctors within the Niigata Prefecture. The signing ceremony, attended by Masafumi Kawamura, Dean of the School of Medicine, saw the agreement inked by Niigata Prefecture Governor Hideyo Hanazumi, Uonuma Mayor Mikio Uchida, and other key stakeholders.

One of the cornerstones of this partnership is the introduction of a new avenue for aspiring medical professionals. Teikyo University will open its doors to candidates applying for the Niigata Prefecture Medical Training Fund Loan System Priority Course in the 2024 School of Medicine entrance examination. This dedicated regional quota aims to incentivize students by offering study funds set by Niigata Prefecture, coupled with a unique condition: graduates must secure a medical license and commit to serving in medical institutions within designated areas facing a shortage of doctors for nine years. Notably, the repayment of study funds will be entirely waived, reinforcing the university's dedication to facilitating accessibility.
Masafumi Kawamura, Dean of the School of Medicine, expressed optimism about the impact of this initiative. He stated, "Our university's commitment to addressing the pressing issues of doctor shortages and regional disparities in medical care is unwavering. By nurturing independent and autonomous medical professionals, we aim to contribute significantly to the enhancement of local healthcare." This progressive alliance underscores Teikyo University's ongoing efforts to bridge critical gaps in medical services and create a ripple effect of positive change in regional healthcare. As the institution looks ahead, it remains steadfast in its mission to produce not just skilled doctors but compassionate, community-focused healthcare leaders.
