Teikyo's Terakawa Seminar Secures Victory with Innovative "Mountain Dairy Farming" Proposal at Prestigious Student Presentation

On Sunday, December 10, 2023, the Teikyo University Faculty of Economics witnessed a standout moment at the 15th University Consortium Hachioji Student Presentation held at the Academy City Center and Create Hall in Hachioji City, Tokyo. Amidst the vibrant event attended by students from 25 universities, junior colleges, and technical colleges in and around Hachioji City, a student-led seminar from Teikyo named "Terakawa" made a lasting impression with a thought-provoking policy proposal. The winning presentation, titled "Revitalizing the Hachioji Mountainous Region through Mountain Dairy Farming - Creating a Tomorrow with People and Cattle," clinched the prestigious Judge's Award. Hosted by the University Consortium Hachioji, this event aimed to foster the development of Academy City and showcased over 300 reports during its two-day span.

The Terakawa seminar, led mainly by students, tackled critical issues in the middle and mountainous areas of Hachioji, where the forestry industry's long-term slump has hindered value-added production. Compounding the challenge is an increased risk of disasters stemming from the degradation of mountain forests. In response, the student-led project proposes a unique solution – the introduction of "mountain dairy farming," a small-scale method that harmonizes production with mountain conservation. This approach, gaining renewed recognition in recent years, aims to breathe new life into the region. The judges commended the report for its innovative approach, recognizing the potential of "mountain dairy farming" to simultaneously address economic stagnation and environmental concerns. In an era where the intricate connection between life and the economy faces scrutiny in various contexts, the Terakawa seminar's research report offers a timely exploration of solutions. It is hoped that this recognition will inspire students, who lead and drive the Terakawa seminar, to actively engage with and tackle pressing social issues. In the ever-evolving landscape of academia, Teikyo University's commitment to addressing real-world challenges takes center stage, fostering a spirit of inquiry and innovation among its student-led seminars.
