In a significant stride toward combating drug-resistant bacterial infections, Hina Sato, a 6th-year student from Teikyo University School of Medicine, was awarded the Society President's Award at the 72nd Annual Meeting of the East Japan Regional Meeting of the Japanese Society for Infectious Diseases and the 70th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Chemotherapy. The recognition, bestowed upon a student displaying exemplary dedication to infectious diseases and chemotherapy research, underscores Sato's commitment to unraveling the complexities of antibiotic resistance. Sato's award-winning presentation, titled "Evaluation of colistin resistance among carbapenem-resistant bacteria using colistin-resistant bacteria screening medium," delved into the pressing issue of drug-resistant bacteria. Under the guidance of Professor Yusuke Yoshino and Senior Assistant Professor Satoshi Nishida, both esteemed faculty members at Teikyo University School of Medicine, Sato explored the realm of infectious diseases caused by drug-resistant bacteria. Expressing gratitude for the award, Sato conveyed, "I would like to continue my research so that I can publish this work as a paper. I would like to thank the teachers who have guided me and Hatsune Abe, a second-year student from the Department of Nursing Faculty of Medical Technology, who assisted with the experiments. In the future, I aim to obtain a national medical qualification and continue basic research while engaging in clinical practice."

Senior Assistant Professor Nishida commended Sato's proactive approach to research, stating, "The topic of Mr. Sato's presentation was the use of last-resort drugs for multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacterial infections. This ambitious project explores the effectiveness of such drugs, shedding light on silent pandemics. Through this presentation, I hope that other students will grasp the gravity of drug-resistant bacterial infections and contribute to patient care in this field in the future." Nishida emphasized the importance of fostering a research mindset among students and expressed his optimism for Sato's continued contributions. "I hope that he will continue to have a research mindset and be active in the future. I also hope that many other students will actively participate in laboratory assignments and use this as an opportunity for self-improvement," he added. As medical technology advances and the aging population increases, the risk of drug-resistant bacterial infections is expected to rise. Sato's work stands as a beacon of hope, inspiring future generations of researchers to actively engage in the battle against these silent pandemics. The recognition at the conference not only celebrates Sato's achievements but also highlights Teikyo University's commitment to fostering excellence in medical research and education.
