In a groundbreaking initiative, Teikyo University's Itabashi Campus played host to a two-day joint class on September 7th and 8th, 2023, uniting three faculties and four departments in a unique collaborative effort. The event, titled "Medical Communication," brought together students from the Faculty Department of Medicine, Faculty of Pharma-Science, Faculty of Medical Technology, and their respective departments in Pharma-Science, Pharmacy, Nursing, and Orthoptics. This distinctive course leveraged the university's distinct learning environment, where medical faculties converge on the same campus, adjacent to the esteemed Faculty School of Medicine-affiliated hospital. The objective? To instill a deep appreciation for Team Medical Care, nurturing essential communication skills vital in conveying accurate patient information across a diverse, multidisciplinary team. Students honed their ability to identify and organize both physical and psychosocial concerns, fostering an environment where mutual suggestions drive the pursuit of effective solutions. A total of approximately 550 fourth-year students participated in this enlightening endeavor.

Central to the curriculum was the utilization of the specialized textbook "Medical Communication 2nd Edition (Kyoto Hirokawa Shoten, published in March 2022)," a collaborative effort authored by esteemed faculty members from Teikyo University's Medical Communication Steering Committee. The class delved into a riveting clinical case study titled "Foot Gangrene Develops Due to Neglect of Diabetes." Small teams of 8 to 9 students were formed, each tasked with dissecting the intricate scenario of a suffering patient. Through rigorous group work, teams first shared comprehensive patient information, creating a meticulous problem list encompassing medical, psychological, and behavioral facets. A thorough plan was meticulously crafted, culminating in presentations from all teams. This dynamic approach encouraged students, embodying roles as doctors, pharmacists, nurses, and orthoptists, to view patients from a diverse range of perspectives, ultimately fortifying the cohesion of the medical team.
Post-group work presentations, students were privy to a revealing video showcasing a professional multidisciplinary conference held by the Endocrine Metabolism and Diabetes Internal Medicine team at the School of Medicine Hospital. The session dissected the very same clinical case study, affording students a valuable peek into the complex process of patient assessment and treatment decision-making. The ensuing comparative exercise ignited renewed determination among aspiring medical professionals. Interactive Q&A sessions and spirited exchanges with the medical team provided a platform for students to glean insights from seasoned professionals. Their thoughtful responses, accompanied by warm encouragement and expert advice, further enriched the learning experience. This collaborative effort not only leveraged departmental expertise but also fostered an environment of mutual respect and appreciation, pivotal in realizing optimal patient care.
